Le Freak, C'est Chic: Ulysse Nardin presents Freak ONE at Watches & Wonders 2023
A new and avant-garde freak that continues the "dialless" concept. no hands. No Crown"? Sign up with us!
For over two decades, Ulysse Nardin has fueled our horological fantasies and sparked our curiosity about watches by regularly adding more Freaks to our lives. Time and time again, the brand proved its excess energy with these releases, which were sometimes imbued with the carefree attitude that Switzerland-based Le Locle label is known for.
Now, to the ecstasy of the watch world, Ulysse Nardin continues to show off its dynamism with the release of the Freak ONE at Watches & Wonders 2023.
how it started
It was in 2001 that collectors and the press alike saw the original Ulysse Nardin Freak.
The Freak was the culmination of the 1980s collaboration between Rolf W. Schnyder and Ludwig Oechslin, which marked the first time a major Swiss watch brand put silicon components in the spotlight. While it was another four years before fans of the watch could get their hands on the next version, it was clear the Freak's impact had been made and the watch enthusiast community wanted more. After 2001's OG Freak, Ulysse Nardin presented several versions to the public, starting with the sophomore version: the Freak 28,800 V/h and the Freak Diamond Heart, both launched in 2005.
In contrast, Freak DIAMonSIL came out in 2007. During the design and development of this model, Ulysse Nardin continued its forward-thinking innovation, using a synthetic 'nanocrystalline' diamond escapement grown on silicon components. Hence the name: DIA Mond-on-SILicium.
By 2010, with the introduction of the Freak Diavolo and a new colorway for the line: black and red (replacing the blue hues of previous iterations), the devil on our shoulders (or rather, the devil on our wrists) appeared. A few years later, in 2013, the Freak Cruiser arrived and included more of the brand's aquatic DNA, embodying the brand's anchoring themes more than ever before. But it wasn't until 2015 that Freak's oscillators were moved to the center with Freak Lab. Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registred or enter the forums! |
Then, in 2018, the look of the Freak case and bezel changed radically for the first time since its introduction. That year, Freak Vision gave buyers a sleeker take on the iconic timepiece by replacing the "waves" on the bezel with sensible 3D elements, which honestly look pretty darn good.
Finally, after releasing two more Freaks, the Freak X in 2019 and the Freak S in 2022, the brand is ready to unveil yet another highlight at Watches & Wonders 2023.
how are things
The new Freak ONE draws design inspiration from the original 2001 version, returning to its three main visual features: no dial, no hands and no crown.
As you can see, the latest Freak has a similar notched bezel to the first model. However, the Freak ONE also pays homage to other versions in the Freak series through its exterior aesthetic and technical features. Only registered users can see links on this board! For example, the ONE's open gear train is inspired by 2013's Freak Cruiser, while its legibility codes are reminiscent of 2018's Freak Vision. Even the black DLC-coated titanium and rose gold detailing of Ulysse Nardin's newest model is reminiscent of last year's Freak S design.
joyously unorthodox
But what can we expect from Freak ONE to hold our attention until the next Freak comes along?
First off, no other watch does it quite like the Freak. That alone is enough to get the industry excited every time a new release comes out. Moreover, even if you are not a collector, you can appreciate the beauty of this series of watches; just a pulse or at least part of the brain is enough. But for this 2023 edition, there's even more to this timepiece to quicken the pulse. Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registred or enter the forums! |
The Freak ONE contains the UN-240 manufacturer's self-winding movement, which has a power reserve of 72 hours and, typical of the collection, is a flying carousel movement that spins on its own axis.
The 44mm black DLC-coated titanium case has a soft satin finish accentuated by the 5N rose gold bezel and black titanium case back with sapphire insert. The watch is water resistant to 30 meters, which should come as no surprise to anyone for a brand with such a strong connection to water.
final thoughts
While Ulysse Nardin is often off the radar of mainstream watch buyers, those who believe in the brand and view it with an understanding and appreciation for ingenuity will influence others who simply don't.
Thankfully, enough of us actually do. We get it. We want more. Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registred or enter the forums! |
